Title: Practical Unix & Internet Security, 3rd Edition

Authors: Simson Garfinkel, Gene Spafford, Alan Schwartz

Excellent Reference/Information Work

An O'Reilly classic, this book belongs in the library of any system or network administrator, right next to Chapman and Zwicky's "Building Internet Firewalls" and Frisch's "Essential System Administration". In the style of other O'Reilly works, this one gives a great overview and explanation of many topics in security, with helpful appendicies including a checklist, emergency response teams (FIRST, CERT, etc.) and more. Well organized and much improved in the 2nd ed. (I also have the 1st ed.), it has aged well.

Title: XSLT : Programmer's Reference (Programmer to Programmer)
Publisher: Wrox
Authors: Michael Kay
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
The best XSLT book I've read

I bought the O'Reilly book titled XSLT, and boy it made no sense to me. I bought this one, and I *got* it. Kay is one of the world's foremost experts in XSLT (obviously), but he's a crackerjack technical writer too. I can't praise the book enough. It's simply a joy to read and use; I use it as my reference now that I am a proficient/expert XSLT programmer myself, and I have to say that I don't have many books that are good enough to introduce you to a subject and then keep around. I don't think I'll ever outgrow this one.

Title: Testing Applications on the Web: Test Planning for Internet-Based Systems
Publisher: Wiley
Authors: Hung Q. Nguyen
Rating: 4/5
Customer opinion - 4 stars out of 5
Organized and professional

This book is about web testing in general, not just performance testing, and is a must have for the professional testing engineer. Chapters 7 and 8, on performance and scalability give a very good introduction to the subject, and include a great sample performance testing plan.

Title: The Visual Display of Quantitative Information
Publisher: Graphics Press
Authors: Edward R. Tufte
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
It Changed My Outlook for Life

Though some of the examples of computer graphics are dated, the principles still resonate. This book was recommended to me in the late 80's and is still the major influence in how I think about presenting data. Tufte writes with quick wit and tremendous examples.

Buy the book in spite of the title - it belongs on every professional's bookcase.
