Practical C++ programming

This is one of the better books on learning how to program C++ that I have seen. The book is intended for someone who has little or no experience programming so a large part of the book is dedicated to basic syntax with C and C++ examples. The book is also good for experienced programmers who want to learn C++.
Most of the book is devoted to the basics of C++ coding starting the traditional "hello world" program and ending with some more advance topics like linked lists and binary trees. There is a good section on the standard template library, something that is very hard to find in any book on C++ I've seen.
The book also spends a lot of time promoting design, coding style, and testing which is sometimes left out of books that teach you how to program. He also covers a lot of useful ideas on what not to do as a programmer helping you to avoid common traps that programmers can get into with C or C++.
On a critical note I think I would like to see a few more coding examples. He does seem to cover the information quite quickly and maybe this could be a problem for someone who has no experience with compilers and coding.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn C++ and basics of Object Oriented programming. The book uses standard C++ code so it is not tied to any specific compiler or programming environment.

Title: A Programmer's Guide to Java (tm) Certification

excellent (precise,concise,clear,carefully written...)

This is exactly the book I was searching for, a book that not only makes you able to pass the certification, but teaches you the Java language. I agree with all the other five-stars review; I may add just that the authors have taught Java before writing this book, and so they know how to effectively communicate their ideas to a technical audience, how to be precise without being unnecessary detailed, and so on ... and that alone explains why this book is so good.The exercises themselves are excellent. They are written with the purpose of being thought-provoking (again, a by-product of the authors experience as teachers), which made me remember very well all the intricacies of the Java language (which is not a "simple" language, contrary to public opinion).The end result ? I now consistently score 90% or more on all the mock exams I've tried ... but, much more importantly, I feel very confident with the language, and I read and write it as if it were plain italian (ooops, english)! I can't ask for more.

Title: Optimizing Oracle Performance

Must Have for those who tune Oracle Databases

This book delivers on its promise to open up a new world of analysis and tuning to most DBAs. The concepts, calculations, and methods it provides are excellent. As an experienced tuning consultant I had used some of these methods in the past but this book brings them all together.

The book is written in a style which is enjoyable, scattered through with "war stories" and experiences which illustrate good points.

This book is not just another script book. The author not only shows you how to tune using his method but also explains why that method works. There are complex calculations included in the descriptions but it is not necessary to know higher math to use this process. No matter what method you use for tuning SQL and Oracle instances, there is material in this book which will enhance your understanding and your tuning toolkit.
