Great...and a little dated

This is a fantastic book, but how disappointing that the science in the '99 edition was not updated! I think that the brain science especially should have been updated, given the new understandings of how the brain "re-wires" itself as it learns and remembers. This certainly bears on any discussion of hardware vs. software in our minds, doesn't it? Hofstadter's arguments for not changing a word in the re-printing seem pretty tenuous in this regard.

Certainly not the best beginning ASP.Net book

I bought this book because of the reviews it had on Amazon. I learned from this experience that you can't use Amazon reviews as your sole criteria for purchasing a book (that's why you should stop reading now). The author glosses over many of the principles needed to learn the subject. Instead, he briefly discusses code examples (and these explanations many times leave you with more questions than answers) and does not highlight with enough clarity the most fundamental aspects of ASP.net. One of my biggest problems though was the authors total lack of explanation for the end of chapter exercises. If you have any questions (and you will) about how and why the author has coded one of the exercise solutions, you won't find the answer anywhere in this book. Furthermore, many times I found that the exercise problems asked you to perform operations and methods the author didn't discuss in the chapter or any previous chapter for that matter. These problems will really leave you scratching your head. It doesn't deserve one star, but definitely doesn't merit 4.5 (it's current average). I just purchased ASP.Net Unleashed and this is by far a much better book. It would be my recommendation.

I wish all web development books were as good!

I have collected a small library of web development books and I can simply say that "Sams Teach Yourself ASP 3.0 in 21 Days" is one of the best books I have read. I hope the same authors of this book will come out with an "ASP+" edition. Many publishers have a lot to learn from this book.

--major revision--

Sometimes a new edition is simply a correction of mistakes. This book is more than that but a complete overhal that brings a great book up to the standard as it stands, while adding the experience of having used the language to its fullest for good and bad results. There is still no better book for finding some feature of the standard and no better place to win a bet about it. Few books deserve a place on my desk, this one has earned it
