Great book for C++ coding

Lots of math, lots of theory, only a small chapter at the end with some applications. I wish the authors had more clearly explained the motivations for using a particular approach. It looks like a bunch of theories... Not usable.

TOTALLY lacking in depth. For the beginning programmer ONLY.

This book offers tiny examples and prose for just about all the aspects of Java. They are very concise and to the point, giving you time to analyze them closer; and maybe use the javadocs to get the feel of how everything fits into place. I'll probably reference this book often in the future. I don't think that this would be an "easy read " for those who are new to programming, so it's probably wise to get a little programming experience first.

Very well put together.

Over the past year I have found more and more the need to qualified security professionals. I have also found that security certifications are more in demand than ever.

This 700 page manual is an excellent resource for the certification of CISSP. Broken down into three parts part 1 breaks down the exam objectives by covering such topics as access control, which is an excellent read.

Also in this section you cover security management, which I found to be helpful in my job. Other topics in network fundamentals, disaster recovery and law and ethics.

Part 2 is the final review of the entire 10 domains, which has a practice exam included. Part 3 is used for appendices and other material. There is a cd included, using the Prep Logic testing engine, and you can order more exams from the Prep Logic website.

The book has exercises and test and review questions in each chapter. Overall the book can be used in a self study mode or better yet in the formal classroom setting.

Good points but a bit heavy handed

I cannot disagree with any of the points Mr. Steele makes in his discussion of best practices. He gives examples of what to do and what not to do. However, if one were to attempt to follow all the guidelines laid out in the text, it would increase programming time quite a bit. I suppose, with experience, many of the suggestions would become second nature. Overall, a very good text that explains many Computer Science/OOP topics in a Java context. Worth the price.
