Simply Awesome...

I've changed my review. All I can say is awesome. People have it to easy when they publish books like this! Really, it covers everything about OpenGL you could ever think of. The only thing I wish the book did was cover some topics in more depth, like occlusion culling. It's not really oriented to people wanting to make game engines with OpenGL, it just describes every thing you could pretty much throw at the pipeline and want to render, and things I never even imagined before.

It's really a reference, but I wish I had had this reference a few years ago. It would have made my life so much easier. I had to learn from the bits and pieces I could find, and from other people.

I would guess the best way to describe this book is a reference on all the techniques nobody talks about or things you should know and didn't. Really!

New edition just released

I just got this book, so haven't had enough time with it to offer a good opinion. BUT, I can say that the book has been completely updated. So the previous negative reviews dated 2001 don't really apply any more.

Power Tools or useful nuggets?

This is a useful book and contains a huge number of insightful nuggets of information presented in the format of short articles. I found references to things I had never even dreamed of existing in Unix. However, I find that the "nugget" approach is not as useful as a coordinated text would have been, because some things are covered several times, while other things are only mentioned in passing. This book would probably be most useful to a system administrator or user as an adjunct to another reference text. The typesetting could also have been improved, as there are some references in a very pale grey font which I find unnecessarily hard to read, expecially in dim light.
