Through thoughtfull presentation

Bruce Eckel proves both in his writing style, and coding style to be thoughtful, open to readers feedback, and constantly striving for an excellent product.
This is shown by placing the draft/final version on the internet free to review. It has been viewed by novice and expert readers, and improved by their suggestions. The book also servers a good jumping off point to other books as Bruce freely acknowledges other authors and books that have been of help to him in learning Java.
Best of all the book retains a single voice in telling the story of Java.

Title: An Introduction to General Systems Thinking
Publisher: Dorset House Publishing Company, Incorporated
Authors: Gerald M. Weinberg
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
A primer of good and fearless thinking.

This book is a quiet little masterpiece, where its author shares his observations of his world in a personal way. With the same light touch, he also delves into the thought structures behind these observations. This is practical scientific philosophy with a folksy, conversational, almost homespun, style that never gets lost in abstractions or strays far from living examples in everyday life. Its lack of academic bluster and techo-pomposity is refreshing and informal, yet the insights have a power that cannot help but affect your own thought processes. An example ( for me) is the classification of all systems into three types: Determinate, Medium-number, and Statistical. This notion has proven to be fantastically useful over the years. Several other observations took some nerve to put into print. The net effect of the book is, at its end, also inspirational. Here is someone showing all of us how we can deal with the big, bad world in a friendly, humourous, courageous, and empowered way.

Title: Head First Design Patterns
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Elisabeth Freeman, Eric Freeman, Bert Bates, Kathy Sierra
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
An excellent resource

This is just an amazing book! Hats off to O'Reilly and Freemans for putting together this book. Book explains the concepts with incredible ease and simplicity, better yet, its such an interesting one that you just dont feel like stopping.

I've been exploring books on Patterns for a while and there are really good ones with 5 Stars etc but they take more traditional approach and things can get boring.

Over all, this just the book you need if you wanna get started with Design Patterns and build a solid foundation.
