Great for newcomers

In our company, we have some junior programmers that I get to supervise. For them, this is essentially their first programming job. I was searching for a good introductory java book to help get them up to speed. After some travails, I narrowed it down to this book.
It explains enough about java to get new programmers off to a good start. Several of my guys said this book was highly "cool"! Glad they liked it.

A Surprise

I was just reading some of the other reviews and was surprised to discover this text is also used for Master's level classes. I'm pursuing my BSIS through distance learning, and this book was used for a recent class. Although I sometimes struggle with reading texts because they are not as exciting as the nearest fiction book, this was surprisingly easy to make it through. I didn't get lost in long paragraphs and obscure explanations. It gets a great big thumbs up from me!

Poorly organized

You can get by with this book (I own the 3rd edition and was assigned a much earlier one in a C++ class I took in 1995).
The book's main flaw is that it relies on examples so heavily that it's very difficult to use as a reference. While I realize the book was not written as a pure reference, the authors could isolate reference text (definitions and so on) from example text and make the book much more readable.

A must have

I just purchased this book recently because of all the reviews. I was not disappointed. This book teaches you in-depth 3D theory--not some 3D graphics library designed by the author. It gives you the background and understanding to create your own 3D engine.
