Great book, but just one caveat

This book is NOT for beginning programmers. We are using this book in a Summer School 6 week session and everyone at this point (week 3) : scrambling to come up with alternatives. This book: NOT ENOUGH EXAMPLES IN BOOK. ASSUMES PROGRAMMING KNOWLEDGE. We've already lost 50% of class due to dropouts from being completely confused!

The devil is in the details...

I must agree with the bulk of the reviews of this book: it is excellent. This is my first attempt at mastering data structures and algorithms, and I have found the treatment to be accessible and interesting. But I have two concerns that prevent me from giving this book the full 5 stars. The first is that it is now dated. It was published in '98, and the version of the JDK supplied is 1.1.5 when the present version available from Sun is 1.2.3. It doesn't make a big difference, because a lot of the basic structures are the same; but it does mean that the book doesn't cover the Collections interface, which directly deals with data structures and algorithms. My second concern is that the editing is often poor. I have noticed errors in the code examples several times. As I am often struggling to follow the code as it is, these errors can really make things confusing. When brackets or semi-colons are missing it can completely change the meaning of the code. Also, in one particularly tricky description of an operation the 'to' and 'from' objects were reversed in the text. That one had me stumped for quite a while before I realised that it was an editing error. Given that the publishers have had two years to correct these errors I find them to be quite a blemish on the value of the book, particulalry if you are not already perfectly fluent in Java as a language. Even with these concerns, though, I do not hesitate to recommend this book to anybody who is a programming novice. It is a gentle introduction to the common algorithms encountered in other texts. Just watch out for the typos!

Title: ASP.NET Unleashed, Second Edition

Simply the best to come out so far covering ASP .NET...

I believe I have purchased just about every book covering ASP .NET from Amazon since the inception of .NET.
That's a lot of books! Unfortunately, MOST turned out to be real duds or overly simplified - not much good for building real applications and ASP .NET sites. Too many authors were just trying to meet deadlines and produce one of the first books on the subject to hit the market - most are paper weights if anything.
This book is by far the best. Leaves the other reads in the dust. This book , however, is not for programmers just beginning .NET programming. It covers many real world applications of .NET and applies real world solutions. I've only owned the book for 4 days and it has already answered many of my lingering questions that the previous books did not cover.
Simply THE BEST ASP .NET book out there! I'm not a paid endorsement either. More so a frazzled programmer trying to learn the new platform quickly and apply to projects at my work place. I'm currently building a new LIMS application for the product test lab at my work place. The application is 100% ASP .NET.
Where the other books were a disappointment, this book's organization and content display the author's cohesive thought process. His pride in producing a quality book shows through!
I look forward to future releases from this author.

Great Practical Tips

I always look for applied books about financial modeling. This book answers to many of my questions. It simply shows how to program complex formulas and equations into practical use. I think this book is the best of its type.
