Title: Network Intrusion Detection (3rd Edition)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Stephen Northcutt, Judy Novak
Rating: 4/5
Customer opinion - 4 stars out of 5
Overall a good book

This is a great book. It provides good detail on crucial ID topics. The examples in the book are clear and easy to follow. The book also does a good job of describing IP fragmentation. I would also recommend that someone get Bejtlich's The Tao of Network Security Monitoring. Read Network Intrusion Detection first then read The Tao. You will be an expert in the area of intrusion detection and network security monitoring.

The only down side to this book is that not enough attention is paid to exploring the gory details of networking like Ethernet frames, IP/TCP/UDP/etc. packets. This is an important topic for security people to understand.

Partial Review.

I have only read up to chapter 4. Making that point clear, the only thing I can say about this book is: How many computer books you can say you non-stop? This book is a page-turner!
Extremely well written, very open-oriented and detailed. Full with advices all around.
The only reason why I am writting this review before finishing it is because I got the Fourth Edition 2 weeks ago at a local bookstore... I don't know why this website still carries the older version.... So look for the new one! It is THE Win2k book to have in your library...

Title: Effective Java Programming Language Guide

Best Java book I've read for a long time

I don't find many programming books that make me want to read every page -- this is one of them. I consider myself a somewhat advanced Java developer, and as such, am familiar with the concepts in the book. Still, Bloch has a way of distilling and presenting the information that is invaluable. I'm certain that all Java developers will take a lot away from this book and I highly recommend it.
