Title: Oracle PL/SQL Programming, Third Edition
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Steven Feuerstein
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
If you're doing PL/SQL, this is THE book to have.

O'Reilly publishes good reference books. I always look for one of their books first when I am looking for a book in a given subject area. No one book in their Oracle series has it all, though. Each book covers it's subject area in depth...just make sure you get the right book! If you like the "Whatever For Dummies" kind of books, then O'Reilly books aren't for you. My only knock is that there are more books in the Oracle series than is really necessary...marketing at it's worst! Some of the seperate PL/SQL related books should have been combined into one volume.

Title: Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Visual Basic .NET 2003 (VB .NET) in 24 Hours Complete Starter Kit
Publisher: Sams
Authors: James Foxall
Rating: 4/5
Customer opinion - 4 stars out of 5
first ever review

I think James Foxall's book on VB.Net successfully hits the middle ground, not an easy task, particularily within the constraints of a '24hr' structure.
The style is clear and logical and the pace was just right for me.
I found his constant reminders of good practice very reassuring. The examples were more than adequate.
I must confess I have 'dipped into' many books on VB.Net, therefore by definition I am not a novice and this may have helped in my understanding of the book.
Most readers will get added value and early rewards from this work.

Title: Maya Character Creation: Modeling and Animation Controls, First Edition
Publisher: New Riders Press
Authors: Chris Maraffi
Rating: 5/5

The best rigging resource ever!!!

Outside of the patch modeling and other preparation to animation, the rigging in this book is AWESOME!! I love this book and use it as a resource often. The advanced MEL scripting you will learn will allow you to create a graphical user interface for selection of the character and sliders for the controls as well as advanced facial animation setup and great skeletal hierarchy with nice driven and cluster based motion. The author has emailed me back with the question i asked him quickly and efficiently, very nice guy. I don't care who you are and what you do but if you use Maya definitely buy this book.

The definitive guide to regular expressions

Regular Expressions ("regexes" for short), have been officially integrated into Java with the release of J2SE 1.4. While many Java developers are just discovering them, they have been a fixture in other languages and tools for quite some time. Regular expressions are powerful tools for performing all kinds of text processing, but they require no small amount of knowledge to use effectively and efficiently. This is where "Mastering Regular Expressions" comes to the rescue.
The book's nine chapters are categorized into three sections. The book first teaches the basics of regular expressions, crafting simple regexes, and the different features and flavors available in various regex packages. Next, the reader is given invaluable information about how the different types of regular expression engines work, as well as techniques for crafting practical and efficient expressions. The final section covers language specific issues in Perl, Java, and .NET.
The author does an outstanding job leading the reader from regex novice to master. The book is extremely easy to read and chock full of useful and relevant examples. The author offers up questions along the way designed to engage the reader to apply what he has learned. In-line references to other parts of the book containing information pertinent the particular topic being discussed are also very helpful.
Regular expressions are valuable tools that every developer should have in their toolbox. "Mastering Regular Expressions" is the definitive guide to the subject, and an outstanding resource that belongs on every programmer's bookshelf.
