Title: Linux Server Security, 2nd Edition
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Michael D. Bauer
Rating: 4/5
Customer opinion - 4 stars out of 5
Solid, but perhaps too broad

This is a somewhat high level walkthrough of all Linux related security issues, from basic networking and operating system issues, to web server configuration and scripting language security. At about 500 pages that's a tight squeeze, even for O'Reilly. Some of the coverage suffers, specifically I found the security information on PHP to be very scanty given the popularity of the language and how often web applications that use it are fraught with SQL injection vulnerabilities.

That being said, the writing is excellent, and the coverage that is there, which is at a reasonable level of depth, is solid. In addition, security is something you have to work at, so having an introduction to get you down the road is probably a good idea anyway. I'd like to see the next version have deeper information on web server security, but in the meantime this is a solid walkthrough of Linux security.

Title: Professional SQL Server 2000 DTS (Data Transformation Services) (Programmer to Programmer)
Publisher: Wrox
Authors: Mark Chaffin, Brian Knight, Todd Robinson
Rating: 3/5
Customer opinion - 3 stars out of 5
Practical

This book is very much hands-on. Every component in SQL Server DTS is described step by step with examples. It also contains a chapter for helping out with error-handling, which in SQL-server can sometimes be be tricky since there's not much help in the tool itself.
I sometime feel that I loose myself in some of the various examples when trying to learn the tool - maybe a book in color with arrows and color coding could have helped the confused beginner. Otherwise for a programmer used to her profession it contains a great deal of advice and guidance of how to use the tool properly.

Very Detailed, Excellent Work

You will not read this book very quickly! Many up to date tricks are covered. Even with the vast number of topics that are covered, they are described with great detail. I thought the book was a little small in size at first. Although once I opened it, I realized how small the print was! This is a book that will remain on my book shelf for quite some time.
