changed my life (or at least the way I look at things)

In some ways, Hofstadter's intelligence is overwhelming! How could anyone know so much about so many subjects -- and tie them all together? But to use humor and irony and parables to illustrate the concepts was the real genius. Reading GEB made me look at everything differently. His discussion of how DNA works made me see implications everywhere. I've read the whole book twice, and know I could continue to get more by reading it 10 more times. However, I made it a point to read books by all the other authors he cites in GEB -- which led me to a long string of related topics that I've thoroughly enjoyed. There is only one book that I can say had a lifelong impact on the way I look at things -- GEB.

Turned Light Bulb On for me!

I had trudged through the entire book Inside C# without truly understanding the language. After reading just the first Chapter of Petzold I have a firm grasp of C# classes, methods, properties, plus all-important scope. Code samples clearly demonstrated basic syntax and use of the language. His carefully crafted explanations and examples flowed smoothly and precisely building on material he had just presented. They lead me to a "light bulb on", "forehead slapping" true understanding of all the major concepts. Both his code and explanations were elegant. This is a real textbook not a first draft rushed into print. There were also excellent contrasts presented from the perspectives of C, java and C++ programmers.
I don't know if the rest of the book can compare to the first Chapter. But I feel I've already gotten my money's worth and learned something I can use. That makes it an instant classic as far as I'm concerned. This one is a keeper. Like classic BMW's, don't expect to find a good used one. The onIy problem is that now I expect much more from other technical writers and will surely be disappointed. Five Stars.

Excellent Resource for a PHP Novice

I am not a programmer, although I have dabbled in programming, primarily in Visual Basic. Having developed a number of websites using FrontPage, I needed a resource to help me see and understand the world outside of Microsoft. This book was a lucky find, and I recommend it wholeheartedly to PHP beginners. Hopefully, in a not-too-distant future, I will be able to write an advanced user's review of the same book :)

No better book for beginners in Visual C++

I struggled to make the transition from my C++ primer to Visual C++ using Kruglinski. This book was then out of print. Now it's my favourite Visual C++/MFC book, and the one I recommend to colleagues needing to get up to speed and daunted by wizard-generated code. The prose is readable, the samples work, and the book covers all the basics as thoroughly as possible. As long as there's MFC, this will stay on my desk. Thanks, Jeff, for making it all so clearly comprehensible.
