Title: Teach Yourself Visually HTML
Publisher: Visual
Authors: Ruth Maran
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Visually Exciting

This invaluable instruction manual breaks down web page design to its simplest form, and teaches how to harness the power and versatility of HTML to generate attractive looking web pages. The impression of having a private `tutor' guiding you each step of the way is created through the step-by-step visual approach, seeing that you can emulate the exact procedures outlined without any apprehension, and then view the final result in a browser to measure your progress.
Each procedure is conveyed in a logical sequence beginning with the basic concepts and proceeding to more advanced themes, so that learning HTML becomes effortless. This method of visually imparting knowledge eliminates the problem of having to leaf through several pages to find the screen shot that relates to the instructions, along with the frustration of having to re-read the same paragraph many times in order to grasp the main point.
There is a detachable page at the beginning of the book containing a hexadecimal value colour chart with sample colours that can be applied to enhance the appearance of a page, and for easy reference, a comprehensive summary of all the HTML tags used in the course and their functions are given at the end of the book. In addition to the basic HTML tags, this impressive book also covers such areas as resizing images, creating tables, frames, adding sound and video, image maps, java applets and many more features that will allow you to easily create and publish professional looking web pages.
This pictorial, self-teaching `tutor' is just what any beginner or advanced student needs to benefit from the exciting domain of web page design.

Title: Learning the Korn Shell (2nd Edition)
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Bill Rosenblatt, Arnold Robbins
Rating: 3/5
Customer opinion - 3 stars out of 5
Not one of O'Reilley's best

Although this book goes through an introduction to shell programming, and covers many features unique to the korn shell, there are large gaps in between. For example, its coverage of simple string and integer comparisons within "if" statements is not presented coherently.
It does not make a good general shell programming reference.

Title: A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide, 4th Edition
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Michael Meyers
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
This Book is Top Notch for the A+

I recommend this book to anyone who hates reading and has a little to some experience with PC's. This was the first 1200 page book I ever read and I literally read it from cover to cover. The author is very conversational in his writing making the reader feel like they have been in lecture after each chapter. Also, the organization of the book is really effective. Micheal Meyers breaks all chapters into 3 sections: (1) Historical Conceptual - which puts into context how the computers evolved into what they are today, (2) A+ test specific - which dives into the objectives of the test, and (3) Beyond A+ - which isn't anything on the test, but interesting to read. This format makes the flow of the book very manageable and easy to understand. Also the software included is a very good practice test. The look and feel of the software is similar to the CompTIA test.
After 4 weeks of studying the book and doing practice tests, I passed both test. I took the tests separatly, but probably could've passed both on the same day. Personally, I've been doing Tier 1 Helpdesk support for 15 months, which may have helped a lot. This book contains a lot of what you need, but I would also recommend studying some exams from www....com. They have many practice tests that have questions similar to those on the test.
Good Luck and Thank You Micheal Meyer!
