Title: The Essential Guide to Telecommunications (3rd Edition)

NOT a good guide to telecom

I thought at first it looked like it might be a great overview for me. BUT then I was flipping through it and came to this explanation of a byte (a paraphrase since the book is not in front of me):
A byte is a character and has seven or eight bits.
Now, in my little world, if a byte could be either 7 or 8 bits, computers would have an awfully tough time interpreting them. And to say that a byte is a character? Oy. I agree with the review below mine based on that one paragraph in her book. If someone cannot even manage to explain correctly what a byte is, they have no business writing telecom books.

Title: Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: CMP Books
Authors: Trish Meyer, Chris Meyer
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Simply the best.

Anyone using After Effects should consider this book a 'must have'. Written in an informative and relaxed style it immerses you gently, yet deeply into the world of AE and Motion Graphics. The book is unusual in that it works as an assistant to The Adobe Manual / Classroom in a book for someone learning AE yet offers them in depth information on all the problematic areas.. fields, 3:2pulldown, film resolution, motion math, masking, tracking etc. The tutorials on the companion CD are excellent and compliment the book very well. Beginner or expert you should definately give this book some serious consideration. Information is also given on integration with Photoshop & Illustrator, essential as the three programs integrate together so tightly.

Title: JavaScript: The Definitive Guide
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: David Flanagan
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
The best JavaScript book available.

The introduction and core JavaScript sections of the book are well written, and manages to keep the reader's attention. It is excellent in pointing out the inconsistancies in JavaScript implementation across the various browsers and platforms. Good programming code - detailed enough to evoke thorough understanding of the topic, yet consise enough to avoid tedium. The second half of the book, the reference section is an invaluable tool for quick, detailed information about every object, property, function, and method of the core JavaScript language. Excellent book in every regard!

Focus is on the critical production support processes

This book is one of, if not the, best guides to developing, implementing and managing a mature production support organization.
The value of this book is that it takes a business-centric approach to service delivery, and augments material on service level management (such as Foundations of Service Level Management - another excellent book).
Specifically, this book contains sorely needed body of knowledge in a profession that has lost its way. What I mean by this bold statement is the production support function in many IS/IT departments has devolved from service delivery to infrastructure management. IT Services brings the focus back to where it belongs: supporting the business.
What I like most about this book is it not only shows what is wrong with most production support organizations, but it provides a clear roadmap to how to restructure production support from an infrastructure management focus to a service delivery paradigm.
I highly recommend this book to anyone in production support, consultants and IT/IS executive management. It would also be useful to ISPs and ASPs because most of the material can be applied to internal or external customers.
