Title: ASP.NET Website Programming: Problem - Design - Solution, C# Edition

A Great, Great Book!

If you are looking to develop a website in ASP.NET, using C#, and a SQL Server database, then this book is for you. The authors build a website from beginning to end, taking into account so many things: coding standards, tier design, modular development, security, deployment, and maintenance, to name just a few areas. In addition, they target the situation that a lot of people will be in, which is in using a third-party hosting company to host their website. This book was tailor-made for my project.
I didn't need several chapters that dealt with news management, polls, forums, advertising, and mailing lists, as my project didn't require those things. Still, for me, the book was well worth getting for everything else it contained.
All in all, I found this to be unique among computer books. It takes you through the design and development of a real-world project throughout the whole book, step by step, and when you are done, you have a solid understanding of the entire ASP.NET website development process.
Worth every bit of the money.

Title: Expert One-on-One Visual Basic .NET Business Objects
Publisher: Apress
Authors: Rockford Lhotka
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Best book on n-tier architected solutions using .NET

This excellent book describes a reusable framework (CSLA) that is both flexible and relevant to real world development. The author really goes the extra mile in explaining how to build the framework and why he made certain choices.
This is a must have book for any serious developer interested in improving their craft.
The book is not for inexperienced or self righteous developers, many who seem to have reviewed this book.
This book is by far the best book available on n-tier architected solutions using .NET. The described framework is scalable from a single workstation to a multi server environment.
The best companion book is `Code Generation in Microsoft .NET" by Kathleen Dollard where the templates for code generation used in her book are based on the CSLA framework. Save yourself a lot of typing and get her book.

Title: Data Mining: Concepts and Techniques
Publisher: Morgan Kaufmann
Authors: Jiawei Han, Micheline Kamber

A good textbook on the technical aspects of data mining

There are a number of books on data mining. The vast majority of them are non-technical in the sense that they talk a great deal about how data mining is a glorious area, without ever getting into the nitty gritty of how data mining algorithms actually work. There are also a couple of technical textbooks on data mining that are nothing more than mistitled books on machine learning (yes, I know, the ML arena does contribute a lot towards data mining). This is the first true textbook on data mining algorithms and techniques. It covers a vast array of topics and does ample justice to the vast majority of them. In fact, it even covers semi-automated (OLAP) technologies for data mining. The book consistently uses data from a single (fictitious) organization to illustrate most concepts. This gives a strong sense of cohesion to can actually be very different techniques. One key aspect of the book is its question-and-answer format. The main arguments in favor of such a format are (1) it is a clean way introduce a new topic or concept (2) students love it when things are laid out for them. On the other hand, such an approach seems inappropriate for a graduate level text. This book is certain to become "the standard" data mining textbook.

Update (Dec 25, 2004): My opinion about this book has changed over time. I've left the 5-start rating in place, although my current rating for the book is 4 (or even 3.5) stars. The main reason is that I had to supplement most of the chapters in the book with the original research papers to give my students a more complete picture of data mining (in other words, the material can be a bit shallow).

Title: Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: CMP Books
Authors: Trish Meyer, Chris Meyer
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5

I have been teaching and animating w/ after effects for 5 years. This is the best book available on after effects because it offers very clear and insightful technical advice that can only be gained through years of experimentation and involvement in the motion graphics industry. IT IS A PRICELESS INVESTMENT. I require all of my students to purchase this book.
