Out of date

Since this is the Third Edition and the copyright is 2000, I expected this book to be more up-to-date. It barely touches on any LAN speed faster than 100M. I thought it interesting that the author considers Frame Relay to be "new and is just now becoming an acceptable means of transporting information". As far as I know, Frame Relay has been around for several years and the use is far spread. It also talks about Cascade Communications, which changed to Ascend Communication in 1997, which in turn was acquired by Lucent in 1999. It also still references US West instead of Qwest. The authors tend to repeat information in the voice section. I would like to have seen more detail on the Data side of communications. The book is a good basic starting point for learning Voice and Data Communications, but leaves too much out to be a good reference book.

Title: Official Final Fantasy VII Strategy Guide
Publisher: Bradygames
Authors: David Cassady
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Excellent book with execellent snapshots from the game

I played FFVII three times. The latest time I installed a Voodoo3 card and the game runs fantastic in full screen. Everytime I play I refer to the Guide more or less. I bought another book too. It turned out only like two pages on that book contains valuable information comparing with the Official Guide.
Don't exactly follow the book while playing the game though. And there are some minor mistakes that you'll know when you become a veteran, such as you can get to the Acient forest to get the valuable Apocalypse as soon as you breed a Black Chocobo. You don't have to wait to defeat the Ultimate Weapon.
Lots of useful tricks are coverd in the book too. About breeding Chocobo, you may need to find more info on the web.

Title: Security Engineering: A Guide to Building Dependable Distributed Systems

Number one in its class.

I usually buy only network security books. However, I felt tempted by the high ratings and bought this book. Well, the more I read it the more I like it. Well written, comprehensive and up to date, it is a sort of rich jumping table for finding additional information about the issues it already covers. Part two and three, are wonderful complements for people interested in 'traditional computer security'. I believe that any security administrator should be familiar with the issues discussed in those parts.I specially enjoyed the Multilevel Security and Multilateral Security chapters. Full of references, the book is well worth to have a place between your 'special books'. I plan to use it as a reference in my next security courses (for graduate students).

Title: 3ds max 6 Animation: CG Filmmaking from Concept to Completion (Consumer)
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Barrett Fox
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Great book, well-written and very helpful.

This is a great book, and considering how any job doing 3d automatically requires a demo reel, it is a crucial book for anyone trying to make a career of this. It is very well written and encouraging, the author is clearly a teacher and not just a guy passing along information. The book follows the author's project while guiding you along with suggestions for your own work. There is detailed coverage of every step of the CG filmaking process. It begins with the all of the skills required for traditional animation: scriptwriting, storyboarding and sound recording. The sections detailing construction, rigging and animation of facial expressions and speech were particularily impressive and useful to me. But really there's a lot of thought put into every section and the depth of information here is staggering. It very cool to see how a quality project like this gets put together, step by step.
