This book is not for c++ developers

If you want to write in c# this book is for you. The author is very verbose.

Excellent Reference Book - Not a Text Book

I picked this book up because it was the text book for a college class on Perl. The chapter on regular expressions is a God-send for those who haven't ever done any pattern matching. From there, the book maintains the quality of an excellent reference manual.
Several weeks into the course, a couple of us in the class decided to get another book to help learn the ins and outs of Perl. We bought Waite Group's Perl 5 Interactive Course. Using both books, the class created some amazing scripts, icluding a web server.
I particularly enjoyed the humor in this book, especially the references to Star Trek and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. A definite plus!!!

Not a fun read

The book is poorly laid out, and the examples are not explained thoroughly. I already knew Java, so I was able to pick up JavaScript without a large struggle, but if I hadn't known Java, I would have quit reading the book about 10 pages in. One plus is the extensive reference section (200 pages).

Simply a Wonderful Guide Through Strange Territory!

I love Exile. And I love this book. I still don't believe that anybody can solve the Myst Trilogy without cheating. One of the reasons that this book is so wonderful is that there is sort of a "preamble" before each series of cheats. This allows you to still feel the continuity of the game. There is also some "soft cheats" at the end of the book for you die-hards that don't want to use the walkthrough. Also, there is a journal by Atrus at the end. So buy the book even if you refuse to cheat at all. It contains helpful information of the continuing story.
