Title: JavaScript: The Definitive Guide
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: David Flanagan
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Definitve Guide is a modest description

The O'Reilly books, for the most part, are some of the best written. But this book in particular, is an essential for any web developer or programmer and in my opinion, the best book ever written on Javascript.
This book covers a massive range of material in the Javascript language using realistic examples and clear explanations. It can be used both as a learning tool and an important resource which I refer back to often for my Javascript needs.
Items I found to be especially useful about this book were the Appendix areas, the way that just about any term is included in the index, and the listings of implicit objects with their properties, methods, arguments, and the accompanying explanations and examples. The book also incorporates how to concatenate JS with Java and with HTML for forms validation, one of the most important uses of the language.
Definitely a true treasure amongst a sea of programming books!

Use in an Advanced CS Course - it's great

I use this book (and its Volume II) for a course I teach at the University of Delaware. It's wonderul. It's definatly written with the experienced programmer with lots of experience but none in Java in mind. You can really pick Java up quickly with this book and it makes a good reference material as well. If you already know how to program and want to learn Java and experience the powerful features of the language and the APIs and class libraries that come with the Java 2 SDK, then this is the book for you.

This book will get you started!

If your'e absolutely foreign to the language - this book will get you to the point where you can program easily and comfortably with it. I won't turn you into an expert though. Perl is a complex language, and if you really want to become an expert, you better read another book such as "Professional Perl Programming". The value of this book is that it's easy to understand, that you can do great this with Perl right after finishing the book. There is a great extra of introducing you to CGI scripts. I started doing nice things with CGI in my company based almost entirely on what was introduced to me in this book!

An Instant Classic

When I upgraded from CorelDRAW 10 to 12, I was determined to only use the documentation that came with the product. While all of the information is in the user guide I eventually got tired of jumping from one end of the book to the other trying to figure out how to do things. I finally broke down and bought the Official Guide. After using the book for one day I can say my only mistake was not buying the book to begin with. It is an excellent book and I was really impressed with how well it is organized into tasks and projects. The only recommendation I have for the improvement of the book is to add a CD to the next edition.
