Title: Microsoft ADO.NET Step by Step
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Rebecca M. Riordan
Rating: 1/5
Customer opinion - 1 stars out of 5
Do not spend money on this book!

Wait for a colleage to waste $40 on it, then pick it out of the trash. I can hardly believe that Microsoft would put their imprimatur on such a book. Numerous code samples simply do not work. Connection strings for Riordan's own installation have to be replaced; it you don't know already know something about ADO.NET, you'll be in despair. The format is a "color by numbers" sort of thing; the various objects are poorly explained. Different ways of creating objects should not be mixed together in the same program; it makes the source unreadable, and pedagogically useless.
I learned a lot trying to fix the errata myself; I should get paid.

Pretty Good...

When I had purchased Red Hat Linux 9 Unleashed I had already dived head first into Linux, so I knew some things about the subject. This book is still really good reference when I get stuck trying to do something Red Hat, the sections on the kernel is very well written, but this book isn't a good tutorial on Linux in general. A book I would recommed to the novice and also the power user is "Linux: Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition -- by Paul Sheer" its old, but its a classic.

Mac Users - Read this

This review is directed to those who are newcomers to dynamic websites/and or mac users. Get Joe Kissel's book, 50 techniques for the Mac. It shows you how to turn on PHP. Skip the unix stuff written for the mac. Unless you already know unix, it is a huge project to do so.
