The best book on computer rendering yet!!!

Digital L&R is one of the best publications available for aspiring and seasoned 3d artists alike. The topics range from imaging fundamentals to advanced issues like HDRI, and all the content spanned is explained in such skill as to make even a process like proofing with a histogram seem like child's play. What few questions I had that weren't made completely clear by "DL&R" I was able to address in a discussion group hosted by the author's web site. It truly complements the [digital] line of 3d books, and I only wish that professional users of software like Maya & Houdini would write publications of equal caliber. It is extremely fast reading, and the actual book itself is wonderfully done, with every page a full-colour glossed stock, and loaded to the hilt with sample images to help elucidate the book's contents. The only reason I didn't give it the best rating is that the book does not come with a CD, and I had to visit Birn's site every so often for sample files referenced (but not required) in his text. A couple of the files referenced were MOV's, so it was annoying to be in the middle of a [paragraph] and then have to wait for a download to complete, especially with a dial-up connection. It's unfortunate that a lot of the valuable content on Birn's site, the beautiful step-by-step multi-passed rendering of the ant, for example, is not readily available on a companion CD. If "DL&R" included a disc even half as good as the book, it would raise the bar for CGI literature.

Caution Beginners!!

If they could just split this book in half, and not include anything on MFC and call it C++, it would be the best book to buy! Very light reading, i am a VB programmer learning C++ and this is a very smooth transaction. The text is complemented by exactly the right amount of examples. If you don't mind paying some extra for those 300 pages on MFC, buy this book!!! and then get another for MFC that's all. The C++ part of the book is EXCELLENT!!!!

Title: The Adobe Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter)

THE BEST must have book for CS

I thought I was very software literate before I purchased Adobe Photoshop CS. Although I had never used any version of Photoshop, I was off and running with similar programs without any instruction. Photoshop CS is very intimidating at first, which if you are reading this review you already know. I bought several books, this one is by far the one I reference most and the only I've practically read cover to cover. LOVE IT LOVE IT! I learn by doing. By working on my own projects. This book guides you through both basic and advanced abilities of CS with the greatest of ease, and you don't have to have a BS in computer sciences to follow. One note; however, is that this writer assumes the reader is at least familiar with core basic functions of Photoshop. For instance, you might be directed to "open the channels pallet", but not instructed on which drop down tab or key stroke short cut allows you to do so. Sometimes the short cut is given, but not always. I reference the book CS One on One for these basic commands, but only use that book for this purpose. Photoshop CS for Digital Photographers is my "Bible", and the learning curve went very quickly. I suggest anyone interested in purchasing CS definatly invest in this book, and if you can afford 2 books after buying the software program, purchase One on One as a companion piece.

Always by my side

This book is superb for presenting the actual guts of the language. Don't expect philosophical discussions on the merits of Python over similar languages, or tutorial applications. Those topics are outside the scope of a clean reference.
The book is clearly organized and presented in an intuitive manner. I find it indispensible in my day-to-day dealing with Python.
