Simply Fantastic

Not too much more to add to what all the others wrote about this book. Paul DuBois made magic making technical writing come together with practical application. If you use or want to use MySQL, and you DONT get this book, you'll be making a HUGE mistake, and killing countless hours studying other things that could get you confused. This is THE book for MySQL, and I could not (won't) recommend anything else. This is all you need...I implemented my entire e-commerce database for my site with this one book without a single complication....thanks New Riders...

Very readable with good technical content

The book Active Directory for Dummies is easy to read without sacrificing technical content. The author gives practical advice on how to implement and use active directory, not just technical description of the product. Worth the money.

Great introductory text, only covers applets

The book was a great introduction to the basic tools and techniques you need to get started in Java. I was particularly pleased by the coverage of threads/multithreading. I was disappointed that the server was neglected, but what do you expect from an introductory text?
This book was touted as being a book which teaches programming in the Java environment from the ground up. As an experienced programmer, I can say that the book did cover all of the topics a beginning programmer would need, BUT the author fell short in the method/function department. Functions/methods/services are too important to buzz by in less than a chapter. You need to really dig in and get dirty to teach functions properly.
Don't let me get too negative though, the book was extremely well written and a pleasure to read. I felt like I was making steady progress throughout the text. The examples were fun and (best of all) they worked.

Listen to Jonathan Marquardt below

He is exactly right. This is a reference and a very good one. It isn't for walking you through the steps when putting a website together, it is for help when you can get some of the way but not all the way through it. Think of it like this. You have to move out of your house, all the boxes are fairly easy to move except one. You move all the boxes by hand except you need a dolly to move that really heavy one. This book is the dolly of Studio MX.

Buy one book for step by step instructions, and buy this one when you need help with a specific task.
