Title: The Guru's Guide to Transact-SQL
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Ken Henderson
Rating: 4/5
Customer opinion - 4 stars out of 5
Somber and with 0 fluff like Well-Tempered Clavier.

This is one of the books that after reading even couple of chapters you feel obligated to leave a feadback on.
This is the apotheosis of techinical writing. Serios, allways on the topic, never condesending or trying to insult your inteligence.
It is truely well-tempered writing; you go from page to page in somber and attentive procession.
This book should be included in ISO standards as a stick for measuing other technical writing.
If you need a SQL book that is a little more mellow, but still a good reading, consider Vieira's book.
If you are still confused why 4 stars, it is because I hate perfection and also am envious of the guy's excelence.

Cisco Networking for Dummies: Everything you wanted to know

I recently enrolled in a Internetworking class and was not impressed with some of the books available for someone new to this field. Some books had too much or not enough information. I happened to read a friends copy and decided to purchase one for myself. This book is perfect for those of us that are new to Cisco Internetworking and being introduced to the ever challenging Internetworking world. I like the way the information is presented in a straight, but humorous manner that keeps me going back for more. Although this book may not appeal to those that may already have the knowledge, this book is well suited for anyone wanting to start from the beginning as well as those that have aquired CCNA. Great book to use in combination with course recommended materials. Excellent!

Title: Photoshop Elements 2 Solutions: The Art of Digital Photography
Publisher: Sybex Inc
Authors: Mikkel Aaland
Rating: 1/5
Customer opinion - 1 stars out of 5
Overly Elementary, my dear Mr. Aaland

I like this book a lot. I am new to Photoshop Elements and have found it very helpful. It has an excellent index and the instructions are clearly written. It comes with a CD which I haven't yet investigated but there appears to be a lot of helpful tools on it - plugins, utilities. The book also has a wonderful feel to it and the pages stay open - you can put the book on your lap while working along with it on the computer and the pages won't flip away from the one you are looking at. I feel as though I got my money's worth with this purchase.

Title: Art of Computer Programming, Volume 1: Fundamental Algorithms (3rd Edition)
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Donald E. Knuth
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Things change but not fundamentals.

This was one of the first computer books I read 20 years ago (the selection in our office was limited). It remains one of the best in its field. There is just so much information in this series of books that you be hard pushed to ever to think of a fundamental computing problem that hasn't been covered. The books are more geared towards computer scientists than application programmers like myself but nevertheless are really worth reading. Modern high level languages do so much for you these days that it is easy to forget what is going on under the bonnet (or 'hood' for US readers) but even if you don't need to know the details, familiarity with the principles will greatly benefit your work.
There are a lot of programmers who can write code that works but don't have any great feel for what they are doing. The best programmers understand not only what they are doing but why they are doing it that way. These are the ones who deliver the best results and this series of books can place you firmly in this camp.
The only weakness of the book isits over reliance on the author's MIX language. Certainly there are reasons for him using it but it is still a barrier for many people.
