Title: SQL Server Query Performance Tuning Distilled
Publisher: Apress
Authors: Sajal Dam
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Excellent book focused on SQL Server

This book is primarily focused on getting the most performance out of SQL servers. Overall the book is well written and very well illustrated. There are some weakpoints where code samples are overused, but those are few and far between. The standout chapters, like the one fragmentation analysis are worth the price of admission for people looking to use SQL server in large performance critical deployments.

This book should be compared with O'Reilly's equally excellent "SQL Tuning" book (0596005733). That book is more theoretical in nature, often using equations and graph theory to demonstrate how get the fastest queries. This book is much more practical in nature, often showing screen shots and pointing out directly what is most critical.

It's in the understanding of the reader where this book excels. All too often authors understand the topic but do not understand how to present it. Sajal obviously understands the fine points of the technology, but also understands how to pass on that experience effectively.

I highly recommend this book for anyone working in an environment where high performance database work is required, and where the database is SQL Server.

Title: Building Web Solutions with ASP.NET and ADO.NET
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: DINO ESPOSITO (WINTELLECT), Dino Esposito
Rating: 4/5
Customer opinion - 4 stars out of 5
Full of great ideas

This book was written by Dino Esposito who writes the ADO.NET column for MSDN therefore his credentials are undeniable from the beginning.
Dinos' knowledge of the data-bound .NET controls are obvious from the beginning and shared in a way that encourages you to get in and try things for yourself.
Inside of this book you will find a cookbook of wonderful recipes for using DataGrid and other databinding controls with ADO.NET and ASP.NET.
I've been using the ideas found in this book to make my presentation of data more interesting, because I found that Dino has a real knack for creating display pages / grids / forms etc. that are different to the stuff you generally see around the place.
The explanation given about how templated controls work will help you to have the deep understanding of these tools that is required to become a skilled ASP.NET developer.
By implementing some of the solutions that Dino shows off in that book you will really WOW your workmates!
