Wow......

I don't usually rate books but after finishing Larry's I felt compelled to. I am in the closing pages now and must say it is hands down the best book I've read on PHP and MySql. I really bought this book to try and understand PHP-Nuke (a content management system) and the coding behind it. Now when I look through the php files for nuke I don't feel so lost and confused. If you get stuck on anything in the book, there is a very nice forum where Larry himself often visits and answers questions.

Bottom Line: Very efficient code and coding style, Excellent descriptions for every page (including the WAY he explains them), very useful project files (creates a basic e commerce site!), and superb support. You will not be dissappointed.

Title: Managing Windows(R) with VBScript and WMI

Nice introduction, a little code heavy

This is a nice introduction, reasonably well written, introduction to using Windows automation through VBScript. About a third of the book acts as an introduction to the basics of VBScript for use in this context. He covers basics like variables, conditionals, functions, error handling, and more. The other two thirds of the book covers a variety of topics like shell extensions, ASP, XML, active directory and more. This is up-to-date stuff.

On the downside the exposition depends a little too much on code. But if you like that sort of thing you will do well with that. It's not unusual for tech books, but it's enough that I took a star off for it.

Excellent Fundamentals

I challenge anyone with little or no design experience to read this book and look back a year or two from now and say anything other than 'this is a great book!' I read it over two years ago and though I have had tremendous growth in this area since, I am amazed at just how valuable and clear this text still is. DB design is a challenge, and mastering the basics covered in this book will help you immensely. I can't speak for the 'experts' who read this and laughed at the simplicities and over-explanations. But, I can speak for those seeking to master the design process essentials and want a clear and concise guide for their journey... this is that book.

Worth every penny...

If you already believe that CSS/XHTML is the present and future of web page design, much of this book will be useless for you. Zeldman devotes a lot of ink to defining these technologies and convincing the reader that it is time to use them.
However, there are some good tips inside, and the writing style is easy to read (if often overly flip).
On the other hand, if you are still building HTML 3 or HTML 4 pages, or didn't know that HTML had version numbers, then this is the book for you!
