Title: Beginning Visual C++ 6
Publisher: Wrox
Authors: Ivor Horton
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Saved my bacon . . .

I bought a couple of Visual C++ books preparing for a senior project coding final. I ended up working through the odbc database section in this book over and over again. Like all Ivor Horton books, the examples worked, and he explicitly lists all of the steps to perform the exercises.
Because of this book I passed my final the first go around. If you work through the examples in this book, you will gain the ability to use Visual C++.

Title: Creative Projects with LEGO Mindstorms
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Benjamin Erwin
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Delivers what it promises.

Mr. Erwin's book delivers what the title promises, "Creative Projects." From cool ideas for the kids like a giraffe or the "Tickle me Lego" toy, to fun things for adults like "Machine with Minifig," there is something for everyone here.
PROS: Plenty of project ideas for all levels of builders. Tips for building and programming. Ideas are open-ended to allow plenty of do-it-yourself experimentation. I especially liked the internet resources listed in the back.
CONS:
Projects are not laid out in step-by-step detail in the book. (They are on the CD-ROM).

Title: Database Design for Mere Mortals: A Hands-On Guide to Relational Database Design, Second Edition
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Michael J. Hernandez

there are better books out there

This is the most helpful book I have ever read in sorting out the complexities of relational database design. Most books tell you how to use the software but not the basics of design. I was able to put together a fairly complex database - and my relationships work - just by using this book!
