Mundane and Dry - Not for Me

I have read dry and flat technical books before, but this one stands out as being unusually so. There is no passion for the subject here and it is the kind of book that does not make an impact. What really makes for a good architecture is not something that is really discussed and things that require further explanation often seem nipped in the bud. You are not going to get a feel for the nuances of J2EE architecture with this book, and I think it is when you understand those, your retention and grasp go up a great deal. Only then can you weigh options and consider the alternatives intelligently. Sorry guys, I think you needed a bit more time to organize and explain the material more fully. I also think the consistent, machine like quality of the prose detaches the reader rather than pull them in. Some may get what they want from this book, but it was not a book I enjoyed nor one that gave me much insight. Many facts are here and stated, but the pie was not finished when it was pulled from the oven.

Title: CMMI Distilled: A Practical Introduction to Integrated Process Improvement, Second Edition
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Dennis M. Ahern, Aaron Clouse, Richard Turner

Not perfect, but helpful

There is certainly a need for secondary literature to describe a complex standard such as the CMMI. This book does a reasonable job to accomplish this. As it has been stated there are certainly weaknesses. For example the ratio between actual content and number of pages is in some areas pretty bad. One citation an the start of a chapter is nice, two is an over load. In order to gain a fair understanding of the CMMI standard is not sufficient and neither is this book. However, "CMMI Distilled" gets you a step closer.

Save Yourself $25,000 Or More.

If you have your heart set on opening a bookstore of your own, read this book first. It will save you the $25,000 or more that you WILL lose in that bookstore. How? By showing you how to sell books and actually make money doing it. I know I've visited many a bookstore that have only hung around a few years until they went under. But now with Amazon these same bookstores are staying in business longer by doing what you should do, selling their books on Amazon. I just went into a small bookstore the other day and the owner said they sell 30% of their books on Amazon. From the looks of the empty store, I thought to myself that they should sell 100% of their books on Amazon. It would make them more money.
This book not only tells you why you should sell books on Amazon, it tells you which books you should sell, where to get those books and even how to sell them. There are no glossing over on the amount of work needed to make money doing this. I know after reading this any dream of making big money selling books online was pretty much beaten out of me. But that is what you want in an honest book; a no-holds-barred look at the work necessary to be successful.
