Title: The Inmates Are Running the Asylum : Why High Tech Products Drive Us Crazy and How to Restore the Sanity (2nd Edition)

Insightful, educational, but sometimes ridiculous.

I used to like computers--then I got a job where I was actually expected to get some work done on a computer. Every time we upgrade something on our system, I have come to dread the occasion because I know that my work will somehow be irreparably messed up. There was even one occasion where I actually discarded the upgrade and went back to the old version of the software. There is no question in my mind that the way software is designed today really needs to be changed. There is too much software out there that is built as if a third grade kid was designing a swiss army knife--it may have a lot of cool stuff on it, but you end up cutting yourself every time you try to use it.
What this book does is to explore these issues in entertaining detail. The author explores several situations in which major problems or accidents that were blamed on "human error" could actually be blamed on poorly designed software--including at least one example where human lives were lost. The author also offers some specific suggestions on how software companies, and end users, can help to rectify the situation.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this excellent book. It's well worth the money.

It's a MUST

This CD and reference are excellent. What can I add to Fred Showkers review, except to add my voice :-)
This is a quick way to produce very professional looking effects. No tacky designs here and anyone can do it. The book does however break down how some of the effects were made so you can make your own if you so desire. It also teaches you how to edit the effects if you want to.
The CD is usable for any level of user of Photoshop Elements or even in Photoshop. It's worth far more than the asking price.

Great Learning tool for UML OOA/D and UP

This book was required for 1 class this semester but I have used it for 2 others. The author does a very good job of goin in depth and provinding appropriate examples of how to apply UML, OOA/D and UP to large projects. Although this book was written to teach these ideas, I will keep this book as a great reference tool. I highly recommend this book for anyone that has to take any software engineering classes.

Title: Software Project Survival Guide

Great for anyone interested in PC development

This book covers the most important aspects of software development, from the ground up. A great thing about it (and the reason I bought it) is that its lessons can be applied to any kind of software project you are working on; be it a game, database, anything. Combined with all of the online subsidaries and references it denotes, I had no choice but to give it 5 stars. Good work, Mr. McConnell!
