Title: The Business of Software : What Every Manager, Programmer, and Entrepreneur Must Know to Thrive and Survive in Good Times and Bad
Publisher: Free Press
Authors: Michael A. Cusumano
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
An essential contribution by a leading expert

Michael Cusumano's work has always been original and provoking. This new book provides a comprehensive and stimulating vision of the software business. Michael is one of the few persons who has really and personally studied software companies and market dynamics. His contribution is extremely important for software engineers and software managers who want to understand the critical challenges of "doing software".
I plan to adopt it as a textbook for the graduate course on software engineering economics I teach at Politecnico di Milano (Italy).

Title: Microsoft(r) SQL Server(tm) 2000 Analysis Services Step by Step
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: OLAP Train, Reed Jacobson
Rating: 3/5
Customer opinion - 3 stars out of 5
Analysis Services

This book is very basic and should provide a good foundation for those people who are not familiar with SQL 7's OLAP or the newer implementation called 'analysis services'.
It is easy to read, the examples on the cd work perfectly and the tutorials provide a good overview of how to create your own cubes.
It's pretty thin and after reading through the first few chapters I found myself putting it down and just diving into designing my own stuff with microsoft's interface. It's a very logical application and with little or no resource materials people could easily figure this out with the tutorials included with the software.
This is not a good reference book, though I'm at a loss as to what would be a decent reference book on this subject since it's one of those things you either know or you don't.
MDX is VERY thin, and since you can teach the basics to yourself, a reference/primer book on MDX may suit you better.

Title: Hacking: The Art of Exploitation
Publisher: No Starch Press
Authors: Jon Erickson
Rating: 4/5
Customer opinion - 4 stars out of 5
Advanced Hacking and Exploit Techniques

People often talk about whether the hacker technique genre of books such as Hacking Exposed, Hack Attacks Revealed or Counter Hack actually do more to teach the next generation of hackers and crackers than they do to help educate people about security. Those books don't go to nearly the depth that Hacking: The Art of Exploitation does.

Jon Erickson picks up more or less where those other books leave off. He provides a look at techniques and tools used by hackers as well, but he also gives a more comprehensive look at stack overflows, heap overflows, string vulnerabilities and other commonly exploited weaknesses.

Rather than simply describing the vulnerabilities and their exploits theoretically or showing you how to use pre-existing tools to exploit the vulnerabilities, Jon Erickson provides the nuts & bolts you need to learn how to program your own exploit code.

Arguably, this information could very well be used by a hacker wannabe to learn how to break into machines illegally. However, like the other hacker technique genre books, the purpose is to educate so that we can better protect ourselves from such hackers.

Armed with the information in this book you can actively develop your own exploit code to conduct vulnerability and penetration testing- the results of which could be very valuable in helping to secure your networks and computers.

This is an excellent book. Those who are ready to move on to Level 2 should pick this book up and read it thoroughly.
