Title: Microsoft Access 2000 Bible
Publisher: Wiley

Sloppy, rushed effort that poorly rehashes previous edition

I am very, very disappointed with the book, which I purchased last week. It has obviously been rushed to print. The diagrams are often difficult to read because wording in the diagrams is "washed out." If that weren't bad enough, it appears to be unedited. For one example, the book includes the statement "Once your table is saved, however, if you change a field name that is also used in queries, forms, or reports, you have to change it in those objects as well." Five pages later, a second sentence completely contradicts the first: "In previous versions of Access, changing a field name usually meant that any queries, forms, or reports that referenced that field name would no longer work and had to be manually changed. Access 2000 automatically seeks out most occurrences of the name and changes it for you."

Title: Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire for Designers
Publisher: Cadcim Technologies
Authors: Sham Tickoo
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Good Book

I do not think that Professor Sham Tickoo is writing his own books, but I do think that he is writing his own reviews. I think that he has hired a group of inept people to write his books............
I found various command, menu errors alone with spelling errors and VERY bad grammar, "even for an Engineer". In his book, he tells the reader that you will be learning Autodesk Inventor. Give me a break. This is NOT a five star book.

Title: The Inmates Are Running the Asylum : Why High Tech Products Drive Us Crazy and How to Restore the Sanity (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Alan Cooper
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Thought provoking! An epiphany for THIS developer...

I read The Inmates are Running the Asylum while serving as dev lead for a large project with lots of user interface issues. I wish I had read it sooner. Alan Cooper has stuck at the heart of the user interaction issue with an easily-read, concise work, one that has given me an entirely new outlook on my trade. Now, I see so much complexity that I add to my products, so much unneccessary baggage that merely obscures the user's goals, so many features that are merely gimmicks...
Just because I can handle the complexity, there is no reason to expect the user of my products to do so. No more programmer jocks here! Thanks for the enlightenment!
