Title: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Resource Kit, Third Edition
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Charlie Russel, Sharon Crawford, Microsoft Windows Team
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Well Written and Up to Date

Written by the husband and wife team of Russel and Crawford, this is not only a complete text on just about everything you can do with XP Professional, but is (for a complex computer book) easy to read.

In addition to the usual here's how to do that instructions that you would expect, this book goes into other aspects of moving to XP Professional like planning the deployment, automating the installation process, and working in a multilingual atmosphere.

As seems to have become Microsoft standard practice, the CD includes a fully searchable eBook of this complete text and a couple of other books. It also has some 120 tools and utilities to assist in the administration of both clients and servers.

This is the third edition of this book, it includes feedback from readers of the first two editions and is updated to include Service Pack 2, the most recent update to XP (at the time of this writing). This update contains major changes to XP, particularily in the area of security. This alone makes previous editions almost useless.

Title: Learning Perl, Third Edition
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Randal L. Schwartz, Tom Phoenix
Rating: 4/5

Really good book, but..

I would reccomend going with Programming Perl if you already have some knowledge of other programming languages. Go with Learning Perl if perl is your first programming language (which it shouldn't be). Over all, I'd reccomend that you buy both Programming Perl and Learning Perl to get your perl book collection started :), but Programming Perl if you can only get one book right now.

Have my exam scheduled for next week- I had ordered this book some time ago, got it last week, and have spent a good deal of time with it over the last wee4k or so- excellent book! Seems very well laid out, hits all of the objectives laid out by Comptia, and covers them all in huge detail. The DVD is an added bonus- I had no real expectation for the DVD, and was surprised it was so well done, and full of info. This book is a keeper!

Title: Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid
Publisher: Basic Books
Authors: Douglas R. Hofstadter
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5

_G?del, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid_ is a beautiful, engaging, interesting, deep, and, uh, eternal book. Although its appeal is to a limited market (IMO, almost all with NT (rational) temperament (Search for _Please Understand Me II_ above) will enjoy this. Many probably will not get why he delves into complex systems so much, but either way, you're better off reading it.
