A must buy!

To those fans of Isaac Asimov's Foundation series out there (and you know who you are), if Larry Wall is Hari Seldon, then Sriram Srinivasan has to be Yugo Amaryl, the brilliant mathematician who turned the intractable chaos of Psychohistory into the 'Prime Radiant'. Being strictly 1st Foundation myself, I used to get 99% of what I needed from the Llama, but curiosity drove me into the Panther's clutches and I was amazed at how much I managed to pick up. I did struggle from Chapter 17 onwards, where it gets a bit hairy, but this is because of my failings, not those of the author. From what I can make out, if you do manage to overcome Chapters 17 to 20, you will almost certainly be able to join the 2nd Foundation's noble rank of Perl Porters. Good Luck. (For those of you who are feverishly awaiting Mr O'Reilly's latest Perl offering, there is also an excellent section on Perl/Tk).

Boooooring

Analyze your personal software development performance as a self-improvement initiative. Categorize time in phases and record the amount of time spent on each assigned task in each phase. Develop historical databases of size and productivity as illustrated by the project-planning framework (Fig 5.1). Compare initial estimates of size, effort, and schedule versus actual size, effort, and schedule (management metrics). Track defects, classify defects, identify problem components, and establish reliability measurements (product metrics). Presents the goal-question-metric, design and code reviews, cost-of-quality measures, unit testing, defect prevention strategies, and verification process. Includes a set of exercises that put the PSP program into practice. The appendix contains an excellent section on statistical techniques and a complete set of forms and instructions for implementing the various PSP measurement programs. Some questionable practices: the author insists on counting compiler errors as defects, the author uses compiler errors in reliability metrics calculations, and the author recommends performing a code review before compiling the program.
A quote from the author, "In addition to providing the data you need to handle management pressure, the PSP offers many other potential benefits as follows: The insight you gain into your talents and abilities; The stimulation of an almost unlimited stream of improvement ideas; The framework it provides for personal improvement; The degree of control you gain over your work; The feeling of pride and personal accomplishment; An improved basis for effective teamwork; The conviction to do the job the way you know you should."

Title: CCDA/CCDP Flash Cards and Exam Practice Pack

Useful but PDA users beware

All in all I found this to be a good supplement to my other CCDA study material. It particularly was useful to skim though the cards prior to reading that topic (from another source) and then really quizzing yourself after finishing the chapter.

The quiz engine had a few mistakes but overall I found it quite useful.

However, when I installed the flash cards on my Sony Clie TH-55 it caused a fatal memory error that required a hard reset! It was a painful loss of data! After sending my clie back to Sony, they certified it OK, and when I tried to install the cards (a 2nd and 3rd time) it crashed again! Acckk!! I'm sure this is not common but back up your PDA before installing it!!!

I rate it 3 stars only because I bought it so I could study on the train with my PDA, and sadly cannot do so. (would be a 4 otherwise)
