Title: Eric Meyer on CSS: Mastering the Language of Web Design
Publisher: New Riders Press
Authors: Eric A. Meyer
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Best improvement of my skills this year

I have used alittle CSS on my pages before, but Eric shows how to take full advantage and explains the benefits of implementing more CSS styles than I have ever thought possible. I have cut the amount of code on the pages by at least 20% and at the same time added more style and control to the pages.
I started using some of his styles within a week of picking up the book. I was stuck in one area, I down loaded the lessons. It is the easiest way to see how the code effects the pages and what changes and additions I needed to make. I can't say enough about how easy the styles and the code are to follow with the down loaded pages.

Routines an more routines

If you ever had to program a complicated numerical algorithm, such as SVD decomposition, Bessel functions, eigensystems or Fourier transform, you will know how useful this book is. All those problems, and many others, are presented, the theory is explained and the full code of a routine, which solves it, is given. This version brings the codes in FORTRAN 77, but there are versions for Pascal, C++ and Basic. If you need any routine, you just have to "cut and paste" it from the book into your program.

Title: The Big Red Fez: How To Make Any Web Site Better
Publisher: Free Press
Authors: Seth Godin
Rating: 4/5
Customer opinion - 4 stars out of 5
Must-read for any commercial web designer

Seth Godin may "get" the Internet better than just about anyone else out there, and proves it in this brisk but pithy little volume. THE BIG RED FEZ really looks at two very important components of design in an e-commerce site; ease of use and marketing focus.
These two concepts go hand-in-hand in ways that I blushingly admit I did not see before I read this book. Godin's insights into how sites work are smart, sensible, and entertaining.
It's a quick read (I got through it in a couple of hours, at my computer, visiting many of the sites he uses in the book), but the concepts Godin presents are valuable and worth frequent revisiting.
If you read only one web-design book this year, make it this one!
(and a special PS to Seth: Thanks for pointing out the "SADWEEK.COM" parody site; best laughs I've had in months!)
