Real Information for Real Users

If you are the type of user who really wants to take advantage of what Windows XP offers, this book will tell you how to do it. It is organized, well-written, clear, and covers pretty much everything there is to cover. It is definitely not an introductory book, and it is probably the wrong book for the light computer user. For those of us who want to change our own oil (so to speak) it is a godsend.
I had high expectations for the book because "Windows 2000 Professional Expert Companion", by Stinson and Siechert, was excellent. I'm happy to say I wasn't disappointed. This volume is very much of the same style and quality.

Excellent ASP.NET Book

This book is one of the most well organized and comprehensive resources on ASP.NET programming. The author covers almost every aspect of ASP.NET programming and covers each subject very well.
All samples are written in VB.NET. I did not have experience with VB.NET before reading this book, but had no trouble understanding the samples and porting them to C#.
Before I bought this book I read through the sample chapter on Amazon[.com] .... I recommend that you do the same.
The author mentions samples on a CD but this book did not have a CD.
In my opinion this book is well worth the money (even if it does not have the CD).

A masterful book written by a master coder

This is one of the few books that explore T-SQL. As a DBA I am always looking for a better, easier way to write code. This book is full of code examples and new ways to look at the material. I hope that Ken continues writing his series. The next version of SQL Server will allow other languages in the queries. That should be a major change for us.

Title: The C++ Programming Language (Special 3rd Edition)
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Bjarne Stroustrup

The one book to take to the lab

While the author is considered the "master" of C++, this book is far too long and detailed for the general reader. If you were to write a C++ compiler, you would require this book. If you want to learn C++, get something else.
I bought Stroustrup second edition. This edition adds items such as name spaces and the Standard Template Library which the author calls Standard C++ Library. However, this book is extremely detailed. Discussion of classes, the heart of C++, are left to page 200 or so into the book. There is an entire sections/chapters on the various nuances of the language that most programmers stay away from.. While this edition explores the standard C++ library, Stroustrup writing style makes it tedious to read.
Having said that, it is a must for the C++ programmers bookself as a reference on the finer points of C++, but not something to which to learn C++.
