If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't

This book is over 1000 pages of mindless drivel. The author spends a little too much time explaining how the hardware works and not enough time explaining the code. He doesn't even get into directX until chapter 5, over 200 pages into the book.
The title is also decieving, "Fundamentals of 2D and 3D programming." What they don't tell you is that the book itself is COMPLETELY about 2D programming, and if you want to learn 3D programming, there is a "bonus" chapter (only on the CD included) and a list of www links that may or may not help you.
I bought Tricks of the Game Programming Gurus and More Tricks of the Game Programming Gurus and was impressed, but with this book I was not.

Lives up to the title - XML Bible

I have just purchased this book, and I'm debating if I should send it back. I use a Macintosh, and although there is an XML Editor out there for the Mac (Emile Pro) this book and it's CD are non-inclusive of users of the Mac platform. It says so on page Xiii in the book but there was no warning online before I bought it. Too bad, considering it would have been a small effort for a book about a platform-independent development tool.

The simulator pales in comparison to the Cisco Press one

The Sybex Gold lab edition takes most router commands at any piont in the labs, and just like real routers they accept short abriviations of commands, unlike Cisco's v-labs that require the exact command in full syntax for each short activity. The writen lab activities cover about 1/4 of the most important information from the first four semesters of the Cisco Netwoking academy,'s lab program, it very convientaly puts togeather important second semester information with fourth semester information and it does a good job. This lab is not built the same way as the official Cisco lab set up, and you can't change the change the serial lines...

Typographical Errors Abound!

This book covers the topic completely and in a well-organized manner. The writing style is enjoyable. It is unfortunate that the book is marred by numerous typographical, grammatical and syntactical errors, some of which affect the code samples causing them to either not behave as they were intended to or to fail completely. Book buyers should expect a $40 book to exhibit evidence of careful editing - this book does not.
