Title: Exceptional C++: 47 Engineering Puzzles, Programming Problems, and Solutions
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Herb Sutter
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Highly informative, even for veteran C++ programmers

I've been programming in C++ for 12 years, and this is the first C++ book I've read in awhile that I learned significantly from. The section on exception safety is unmatched in any book or article I've ever read. The style and format of this book make it easy to read, even though some of the concepts it covers are very advanced. After you read this book, put it somewhere handy, because I guarantee you will refer to it often as you go back and fix your code to take into account all the new things the book teaches you.

Title: Unix in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference for SVR4 and Solaris 7 (3rd Edition)
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Arnold Robbins
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Deserves 6 stars

If you have to get only one Unix book, this should be it. It won't provide tutorials or a lot of background, but it does provide the most wide-ranging reference for Unix available. The section at the beginning of the shells section which lists standard operators is invaluable for writing scripts.
It does have weak spots -- it limits its scope to relatively generic Unix commands, and doesn't deal with the often-proprietary command sets for LVM and networking, among other things -- but otherwise, it's a fine book.

Mostly a rehash of the Javadoc

I really enjoyed this book. The authors really cover all the areas of SWING - JAVA 1.4. If you are new to JAVA, you might to buy a JAVA primer. This book on SWING has a lot of code which is good for experienced developer. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn advanced features on SWING. I have a message for the experienced developer: the code of the book will challenge you - it challenged me!!!

Fireworks MX 2004 - training from the source

I came here to give the book a five star after finishing it this morning. After reading "joe reader's" review I'll just agree with him except, if your new to Macromedia, don't plan on absorbing this book in one day. It is thorough. What Patti does as an author is to make things easy with a nicely written step by step walk through of very powerful program. No mistakes or surprises that I could see. You will learn Fireworks and further you'll learn how powerful Fireworks is as a stand-alone program and as a front-end/companion to Dreamweaver.
