You won't be a Java guru after reading this, but if you have programming experience with other languages such as C++, then this is a helpful resource.

Not for Beginners

This book is a great book to have. It's wonderfully illustrated with glossy pages and color pictures and has tons of information for anyone wanting master Maya. The amount of detail in this book is daunting and it covers everything from different modeling techniques to character binding to materials and lighting and rendering. This is a definite must for anyone wanting to get into character animation. This is a must have.

Excellent book, hard to believe you can read it for free

I read the web edition of this book as well as his other book Thinking in C++ and find them both to be remarkably well written. Hard to imagine he puts it online for anyone to read for free but it obviously gives him a lot of net coverage and more readers. I think it was a wise decision to do so not only for himself but more importantly everyone else. Just because you can read it for free doesn't mean that it sucks so if you are in the market for a good Java book then this would be an excellent choice.

Amazing

I wouldn't really recommend reading this book from cover to cover, but it has some very interesting sections and can be used as an awesome reference guide.
