Title: Final Fantasy VIII Official Strategy Guide
Publisher: Bradygames
Authors: David Cassady

Not perfect, but it gets the job done

This is a great guide for anyone needing help in Final Fantasy VIII. I played to the end of the first disc without the guide. After I got it, the guide showed me all of the things that I had missed. This guide was very helpful near the end of the game, where I couldn't solve a couple of puzzles by myself. I wouldn't have found all of the guardian forces without the walkthrough. I didn't mind that the area maps are at the back of the book because I would know what to do without knowing exactly where to go to do it. The item lists are a big plus, especially for getting all of the items in the game. In all, this guide helped me a lot with Final Fantasy VIII.

Title: Practical Statecharts in C/C++: Quantum Programming for Embedded Systems with CDROM

Excellent book and code

This book was a definite eye-opener for me with regard to state machines. I recently rewrote a major piece of code to utilize the Quantum Framework (included with the book) and it has worked wonders. My previous code used a more traditional state machine and had quickly evolved into spaghetti code. The hierarchical state machine approach made the new code smaller, more robust, and much easier to maintain and extend.

Title: Beginner's Guide to DarkBASIC Game Programming

Well written, but source code in book is wrong.

I love this book, and I feel it is very well written. The author gives pretty good examples and explains the code that he writes line by line. Perfect for the beginner.

However, nothing frustrates me more than a programming book with source code that does not work. It is very discouraging! What is the use of writing a book with bad source code? Programmers, especially beginners, look forward to the end of every chapter so they can try out their newly learned skills, and work with the end of chapter project. Now I know typos happen from time to time. Usually the correct code will either be on the CD or a support webpage with the company that published. Nope, the source code on the CD was also incorrect. Premiere Books doesn't offer a support website with up to date source code. Sad. I guess there is no QA process with writing tech manuals, eh?
