Merely an introduction to Networking concepts

This book mostly explains networking concepts from a point of view of MIS people. I did not find this very useful from a programming concepts point of view, For example book does not explains the fundamental of distributed transactions, concurrency and replication of distributed data. To me it feels like networking concepts and database concepts were merged in one single book. Book in general attempts to covers a wide variety of topics. It is not very useful if you are a serious programmer in Corba or transaction management.

Definitive is an understatement.

Another excellent book for anyone using Flash. Unlike many Flash books the author is not trying to be clever and impress us with his tricks and techniques (often called, "real life projects"). Instead he is genuinly trying to document and explain ActionScript in a methodical and structured way.
For many, ActionScript would be unfathomable without this book. I have two copies, one at home, one at work. I just wish I had more time to read them.

My Portrait Bible

It is amazing what you can do with Photoshop and this book, and sooooo easily!!! I was able to take a digital head and shoulders photo of a woman and soften the completion, reduce the size of the nose, brighten the eyes, whiten the teeth, remove the background and replace it with a portrait studio type back drop, fix the hair and all within minutes. I am not expert by any means, but I was able to produce and expert looking portrait. I'm amazed with myself! Thanks Scott, this book is wonderful!

A substandard O'Reilly offering

This book has its conceptual merits and demerits. But let's give the authors the benefit of the doubt, and let's assume that this is a decent introduction to its subject matter. I'd still advise against purchasing it, as in detail it's extremely unreliable and often confused.
Since I started counting, I've found an error every 4 to 5 pages. Some are cosmetic, but some seriously damage the value of the examples and descriptions. The text contradicts itself at several points; some examples don't produce the results the text says they will; some figures are glaringly broken.
This book is the victim of an obviously poor editing job, for which I blame O'Reilly more than the authors. Either way, you should probably look elsewhere unless you already know enough to silently correct all the errors you'll find.
