Title: Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Kalen Delaney
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Don't be scared by poor reviews...this is an excellent book.

... "Inside SQL Server...", by the author's admission, is focused on the internal workings of the product.
This isn't a quick how-to book or a SQL Server for Dummies series or even a learn about SQL Server book so you can get a DBA job. It is designed for people whose work revolves around SQL Server and need to understand the product thoroughly. Judged on those merits my opinion is that this book is a must-have product.

Title: Visual Basic 6 for Dummies (for Windows)
Publisher: For Dummies
Authors: Wallace Wang
Rating: 2/5
Customer opinion - 2 stars out of 5
mediocre book don't buy it until you have VB 6.0 installed

I picked up this book with only a minimal amount of self-taught QBasic education from around 10 years ago. I've just finished it, and only have a couple quirks:
It makes mention a few times to "More Visual Basic for Dummies", a book that doesn't exist for VB6.
I ripped through the first 28 chapters or so, breezing through it thanks to the nice, plain english, sometimes funny, or at least mildly humerous writing (the variable name examples are great)... then it started to bog down. Classes, Modules, Procedures, Objects.. all kinda mish-mashed together.. it looks like he was writing till the day after his deadline and needed to finish his outline.
Other than these two half-issues.... The book is great... now I have a great understanding of the very basics of VB, and can start with one of the more advanced books, like SAMs, or MS.

Title: Oracle Database 10g New Features (Osborne ORACLE Press Series)
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Robert G. Freeman, Robert G. Freeman, McGraw-Hill
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
A genuinely readable Oracle book!

Robert Freeman has done it again. With just enough levity to keep the reader from falling asleep, the author makes even the most technical of explanations seem manageable. Freeman's witty, intelligent and ocassionally silly prose makes for a far more pleasant reading experience than one would expect from this type of book.
