Title: C Programming Language (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR
Authors: Brian W. Kernighan, Dennis Ritchie, Dennis M. Ritchie

The Classical Book on C

This is the very first and the most famous book on C; I think it should be a handbook for every practicing C (or even C++) programmer. However, I don't think that this book is suitable for someone who has no previous experience with C or programming in general. The style of the book is very terse, very down-to-earth, and in general not easy. I think that learning C from K&R is like learning C++ from Stroustrup -- it is possible, but it is the hardest way. I learned C at age 16 by reading the Waite Group's C PRIMER PLUS, and only two years later felt comfortable with C enough to read K&R. But then, reading K&R from beginning and to end made a real revolution in my understanding of C and C-like languages (like C++). The bottom line: This is a great book, but absolute beginners would be better off reading something easier.

I Second Thomas Duff's Review

The JFC Swing Tutorial Second Edition is among the very best how-to-do it programming books I've read---and I've read scores! For this reason, I felt compelled to write a review of the book, admiring its organization, applauding its authors and encouraging progammers who need to to write Java GUIs to hurry up and by it. But then I read Thomas Duff's review; I became redundant. My recommendation is to read Mr. Duff's excellent review---knowing that I agree with every word of it.

Title: Joe Celko's SQL for Smarties: Advanced SQL Programming
Publisher: Morgan Kaufmann
Authors: Joe Celko
Rating: 1/5
Customer opinion - 1 stars out of 5
Full of academic exercises and toy examples

I know Joe Celko, because of his sense of humour.
We are bored about teachers and professors having great theorical views and poor practises. Do you need to have a constant look over your car engine while driving ? If yes, you may cause many accident, and I would'nt come with you in your car !
Designing databases and using it, are two different concepts and when the primer is well done the former will automatically be a simple matter of "how to" and not a "technic" reserved to high leveled engineers ! That is, I think, just the way Joe Celko try to teach SQL to us. That is the way I teach and practice SQL and I just want to have larger view about what SQL can do, and this book answer fully to my request !
Thanks Joe for all your books about SQL and databases, you are just the writer that had miss in the many passed years...
