Title: The Adobe Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter)
Publisher: New Riders Press
Authors: Scott Kelby
Rating: 3/5
Customer opinion - 3 stars out of 5
OK, but not that good if u have the previous edition

As other reviewers have said if you allready own the previous version of this book, then maybe you should think twice before spending money on this edition, some of the techniques are exactly the same. I personally find Kelby's sense of humour a bit irritating, just get on with the techniques and stop pretending being sooooo funny. A little kick here and there is ok, but he spills his "jokes" just about everywhere. To the person who complaints about all the creen captures being from macs... Photoshop is VIRTUALLY IDENTICAL in both platforms. To me it seems kelby ran to be the first in publishing a book about Photoshop CS and it clearly shows, less speed and more quality next time.

Title: The Data Warehouse ETL Toolkit: Practical Techniques for Extracting, Cleanin
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
Authors: Ralph Kimball, Joe Caserta
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Another strong Data Warehousing book from Ralph Kimball

In this book Ralph lays down a framework for constructing the DW ETL. This is useful not just in constructing quality ETL processes, but also because Ralph's works tend to 'set' standards in data warehousing. The format of this book is similar to the Lifecycle Toolkit. Ralph takes a very staged, logical approach to the material. Some sections are just great e.g. the chapters on Extraction and Development. A small amount of the material is repeated from the Lifecycle Toolkit and Dimensional Modeling books, but no more than is needed to make this book stand on its own.

Also like the other books, this one takes a vendor agnostic approach. While this may increase the shelf-life of the book, I would have appreciated some comparisons between the major vendors out there today.

Overall: I recommend this one as a buy, even if you have Ralph's other books.

Title: Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Martin Fowler, Kent Beck, John Brant, William Opdyke, Don Roberts
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Outstanding, a must read for all software engineers.

What impressed me most about this book was its attitude. Granted that the book expertly leads us through refactoring of smelly code; and granted that the catalog of refactorings are full of interesting insights. But still and all, it was the attitude that the value of a module was not maximized simply by making it work that really struck home.
You can vastly improve a module without changing its function whatever. Morevoer, such function preserving, structure improving, changes are a normal and essential part of every engineer's role.
